  1. Farm Alpacas " ZAGRODA -RANCHO" POLAND http://www.zagroda-rancho.pl/alpaki.html Alpaca (Lama pacos) – an ungulate camelid mammal. Elaborating family tree caused numerous problems to the scientists, and there are still many doubts about the issue. Presumably, the ancestor of alpaca is vicuna, whilst guanako seems to be the ancestor of llama. However, all of them have a common ancestor, the South American camel, which landed in South America and gave rise to vicuna and guanako. There can be two races distinguished among alpacas: huacaya and suri. They differ in appearance and fiber kind. Huacaya produce slightly plicate wool that grows sheer to the body and is in general akin to the sheep’s wool. Its annual growth is 9-12cm. The suri alpaca’s wool is more delicate than huacaya’s, is more lustrous and hangs along the body in long wavy curls. The annual growth of that one is 10-12cm. Alpaca’s pregnancies last 340 days and usually result in single cria. Twins are very rare, approximately 1/2000. An average mass of an offspring is 5-7 kilos. Crias are breast-fed till they are 6-month-old. Alpacas reach sexual maturity being around 1,5 years old, however only the ones that reach up to 70% of their overall body mass are used for reproduction. They are around 1.5 – 2 years old by then and are induced ovulators, which means the presence of semen causes them to ovulate. Males are fully mature around the age of 3. Alpacas have well developed corpus, with small head and strong neck. Their height reaches 80cm. Alpacas’ characteristic feature is they have three stomachs as well as three eye-lids. The third eye-lid, called twinkler, moves horizontally from the conjuctiva to the outside of the eye. Apart from the third eye-lid, alpacas have also comb-shaped, horizontal diaphragms at the top and bottom of their eyes. Those combs protect the eye from the high-mountain sun. If the sunlight is very strong, the upper comb touches the bottom one. Alpacas are strong, tough and healthy animals. They are adapted to living in harsh high-mountain conditions (little food, great temperature fluctations – in the Andes at 4 500 meters above sea level, the temperatures vary from -20 degrees at night to +20 degrees during the day, chilly winds).
